My Big Adventure - Travel by Train to Seattle Day 2 con't

By the time we passed through Lothair, Montana, it had warmed up to a brisk 68°. I’d stopped complaining (out loud, anyway) and decided to enjoy the moody charm of northern Montana’s vast, unbroken horizon. There’s something quietly mesmerizing about land that just... refuses to end.

Lothair is the kind of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town that still manages to hang onto its roots. It started out in 1910 as a station stop along the Great Northern Railway. Though the post office officially closed up shop in December 2005, the town still clings to its own ZIP code: 59461. That feels symbolic in a way. Like, even if the mail’s not coming, Lothair still exists on the map.

For outdoorsy types, this region is a quiet gem. The area offers year-round angling for walleye, sauger pike, native trout, ling, perch, and northern pike. I didn’t stop to cast a line, but I did wonder what it would be like to fish in all that silence, with nothing but the wind and sky for company.

There’s a kind of quiet resilience to Lothair. No grocery store. No post office. But still here. Still fishing. Still catching whatever rolls by, like a train full of curious travelers.
