Even the mind games have mind games.
Jane Casey had me from the very first page. A woman, badly injured and lying at the edge of a cliff, is unceremoniously shoved over the edge. We were already at the races before I knew we had left the house.
Ruth's life is already unraveling when she agrees to impersonate her roommate, Maura, during a Zoom interview for a job on the Irish coast. It seems like a harmless favor that quickly spirals into something much darker. Ruth is later found covered in blood and hospitalized, unable to explain what happened. Maura has vanished, a body washes ashore that isn't hers, and Detectives Farrell and Ben must untangle a web of lies, mistaken identities, and buried secrets where nothing is quite what it seems. Even the mind games have mind games. It's brilliant.
The story cleverly plays with first impressions. Ruth is an easy character to root for despite making some questionable decisions. Maura remains fascinating even when she's off the page, her presence lingering over every chapter. I also loved the investigative team. Farrell initially comes across as somewhat aloof, while Ben seems almost too trusting. Without giving anything away, those first impressions become part of the puzzle, and Ben ended up being one of my favorite characters.
The pacing is relentless. The alternating interviews and police investigation constantly reveal just enough information to keep the suspense building without ever feeling repetitive. The clues are there all along, hiding in plain sight. And that ending... wow. It's the kind of ending that leaves you staring into space as all the pieces finally click into place.
If I had one minor observation, it's that readers looking for nonstop action might not realize just how much of the suspense comes from uncovering layers of deception and watching the investigation unfold. For me, that's exactly what made it impossible to put down.
Content warnings include murder, violence, blood, psychological manipulation, identity deception, grief, and trauma.
This book was a five-star read with clever plotting, memorable characters, fair-play clues, and an ending that made me immediately want to go back and see everything I missed. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, Everything She Didn't Say belongs at the very top of your reading list.
