Murder and Mayhem in Lancashire
There is nothing quite like a murder investigation that suddenly gets personal.
The Icehouse by J.J. Richards follows DCI Walker as he investigates a series of murders around Lancashire. The killer has a distinctive signature, and unfortunately for Walker, it looks a lot like the one left behind when his sister was murdered years earlier. Her case was never solved, so the similarities bring the past crashing straight into his current investigation.
This was a good, solid police thriller that kept me interested from beginning to end. Walker's personal connection to the case added an extra layer of tension without taking over the investigation, and I definitely wanted to know whether the new murders would finally lead to answers about his sister.
I listened to this one, and while it didn't completely refuse to stay in the car, it occasionally escaped the car, which is always a very good sign.
Four stars. A strong, engaging mystery with enough personal stakes to keep me listening and enough unanswered questions to make me curious about DCI Walker's next case.
